Limited Edition Charred Wood Box
A limited edition wooden box designed to commemorate a rare Jim Beam and Suntory milestone.
Jim Beam and Suntory came to us to help create a highly limited custom wooden box, with only 15 pieces ever produced.
The box was designed to hold a special batch of Jim Beam White, originally barreled for the Chairman of the Suntory board to commemorate Suntory’s acquisition of Jim Beam in 2014.
A few years later, as the batch reached its four-year maturation, the packaging needed to honor the occasion while representing the big vision Suntory had for the future of the brand.
We developed a custom wooden box that used material treatment and symbolism to connect directly back to the whiskey-making process. Inspired by the Japanese technique of charring wood to protect it from insects and environmental damage, the inside of the box was charred to mirror the inside of the whiskey barrel that held the special batch.
The exterior of the box was left in its natural wood state, creating a contrast between raw material and charred interior. Together, these details represented the full lifecycle of a wooden whiskey barrel. Additional decorative elements, including carefully selected color treatments, rope details, and ringing bells, were incorporated to mark the significance of the occasion.
